Primary Focus Areas: Advanced Permanent Monitoring Systems

The Sandefjord Technical Center is home to Sensor Developments, a group of pioneering engineers that are developing one of the most exciting step-changes to the downhole gauge market since gauges were first installed permenantly, 35 years ago. The new system enables gauges to be placed outside of casing, in contact with cement or the formation, without compromising the integrity of the casing. Using advanced inductive coupling techniques the system transmits power to the downhole gauge and receives data back from the gauge and then transmits the data to surface using conventional downhole gauge cabling.

The ability to monitor outside the casing will enable true pore pressure monitoring in real time, under dynamic reservoir conditions.  It has been widely recognized that accurate pore pressure monitoring across a reservoir will enable operators to respond to changing dynamics within the reservoir and so maximize overall recovery.

In another application of this technology, the accurate monitoring of “B” annuli in subsea wells is becoming increasingly important to ensure overall well integrity standards are being met throughout the lifetime of the producing well.

Proof of concept, and stack up tests, for this revolutionary system has been demonstrated to the satisfaction of major North Sea operators and the first installations are scheduled to take place in H1 2011.

Sensor Developments joined the Probe team in June 2010 in a partnership that will lead to the successful commercialization of this revolutionary technology.
