The Compensated Density Tool is designed to measure the bulk density of the formation.
This tool measures density of the formation using by measuring the electron density through the analysis of Compton scattering reactions. The formation adjacent to the well bore is bombarded with gamma rays from a cesium source and Compton scattering takes place. The gamma rays are counted by two NaI detectors, with different spacings, mounted on a skid, and pressed against the borehole wall. The longer spaced crystal is used to calculate the uncompensated bulk density of the formation in front of the pad face. The shorter spaced crystal is used to correct the bulk density for effects of mudcake and hole rugosity.
Both detectors are contained within a tungsten alloy shield, which provides a focussing function. The density tool can be provided with a 1:1 arm linkage for operation with a centralized tool body or with a 6:1 arm linkage for use with an in-line compensated neutron tool. In addition, the bottom sub is equipped with a rotatable bottom connector for orientation of tools hung below the tool as part of a stack (e.g. Micro Electric Log or X-Y Caliper). Configured to run with a temperature probe built into the tool.
